Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO)

What are Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs)?

ELOs are provided through Goal #2 of the Portland Promise, where students will develop the skills, habits, and mindsets they need to become a well-rounded and a prepared, contributing citizen.

We partner with community and business organizations to provide real-world opportunities outside the classroom walls. These experiences can help guide students’ areas of interest for the future.

ELOs include community service, job-shadowing, senior capstone projects, service learning projects, enrichment activities, and unpaid internships for credit.

Often times, job shadowing and community service lead to internships and helps students to make career choices for their future.

Community Service

Any student, grades 9-12, can serve community service for a number of reasons. The hours may be part of a requirement of a class, such as Global Issues, or the student may just want to serve the community. Community service is encouraged and can be the first step in learning more about job shadowing and internships. We are building community partnerships as we find new places to connect with for our students.

Job Shadow

If students have a particular interest in a career path, they may want to job shadow someone in the profession to acquire short-term, real-world experience that may help them decide if it is something they would like to continue to look into for their future. This is good for students who may not be sure about an area of interest and it would be a great step toward preparing a student for an internship.

Internships

To complete an ELO internship, the student must serve a minimum of 45 hours at the ELO work-site. These hours must be tracked and signed by the business/community partner that will be supervising at the work-site.

Senior Capstone

The senior capstone project is a requirement for seniors to finish before the end of their senior year and ELOs are not a required piece of the project. Although, ELOs can be included in their Capstone, if they would like – at the level of community service hours or an internship – whichever works best for the student. *Capstone Criteria link to form
